Basketball – Lesson 1

 

I. Dribbling

a.      Class Name: grades 6 - 8

b.      Skill Level: Control to utilization

c.      Length of Time: 40 minutes

d.      Number of Meetings: 1

e.      Major Focus: ball handling skills, dribbling techniques - finger pads, dominant & non-dominant hands

II. Safety

a.      Activity: remove all jewelry, no chewing gum, spatial awareness, students must stay under control at all times, NO Interference with other students

III. Equipment

a.   One basketball for each student

IV. Objectives

a.      Psychomotor: proper ball handling and dribbling skills, use of finger pads and both the dominant & non-dominant hands

b.      Cognitive: understanding the proper techniques, following the teachers directions and cadences, daily self assessment

c.      Affective: encouragement, respectful to others

b.      Content

·        Warm up - shooting, continuous shooting at one hoop, no shots can be taken from outside of the 3 point line

·        Individual ball handling and dribbling skills

  1. move ball around one leg

  2. figure 8 around two legs

  3. move ball around waist

  4. drop ball from back of head and catch - off bounce, in air

  5. dribble through legs - both, back and forth, figure 8

  6. dribble tag and steal

·        Coach Says - activity plays like Simon Says

c.      Closure

·        What part of the hand do we use to dribble with?

·        Daily self-assessment
