one another when running within the boundaries of the activity, place all items
into hula hoop rather than throwing the items, Blindfold activity - both the
blindfolded student and the student guiding him/her must walk, no running,
student must stay under control at all times, students must get off of any
equipment and sit when they hear the “freeze” cue

interference rule”

proper/mature collecting skill characterized by:
1.
proficiency in fine motor skills
Cues: reach & grab
b.
Cognitive: The student will demonstrate an
understanding of strategies by:
1.
discovering ways to successfully retrieve objects
2.
recognizing patterns and tendencies of other students
which will allow them to retrieve more objects quicker and easier
3.
recognizing spatial relationship between themselves,
other students and desired items for retrieval
Cues: game plan, think ahead
c.
Affective: The student will demonstrate successful
cooperation by:
1.
willingness to work with a partner for a common goal
2.
giving direction, advice and encouragement

Cones,
hula hoops and various items have been set up prior to class
Mats
and cones (obstacles) will be set up prior to blindfold activity
Headbands
will be used as blindfolds and will be distributed prior to that activity
Activity
– Relay Retrieval
1.
Eight cones (stations) form a large oval in center of
gymnasium
2.
Next to each cone is a hula hoop
3.
Inside of each hula hoop there are eight different
items
4.
Each hula hoop contains the same separate items
5.
The items are – red, blue, green & yellow whiffle
balls; beanbags; small foam balls; tennis balls; pinnies
6.
Sequence of levels
7.
First level – practice organization
8.
The instructor demonstrates how to move about the
gymnasium safely
9.
Each student has a partner
10. The
partners are placed at one of the eight stations
11. One
station will be empty due to class size
12. On
the instructors command (‘GO”) one student runs to a different station and then
returns without an item
13. The
second student then runs to another different station and returns without an
item
14. After
the first relay is complete and all eight stations have been reached, the
instructor introduces the manipulative skill
15. Second
level – manipulative skill
16. The
students repeat the same procedure on the instructors command
17. The
object now is to collect eight of the same items before the other teams
18. Each
pair of partners is given a specific item to retrieve
19. The
student runs to a station, picks that item, and then runs back to his/her
station Cues: reach & grab
20. The
student places the item in his/her hula hoop
21. The
other student then runs to a station and picks the same item
22. The
student returns it to his/her hula hoop
23. The
procedure is repeated with partners alternating turns
24. Since
the “no interference rule” is in effect, a partner waiting for his/her partner to
return cannot interfere with another student who may be taking an item from
his/her station
25. It
is very difficult to retrieve eight of the same items because of this
26. The
partners must develop a strategy to be successful Cues: game plan, think
ahead
27. If
eight of the same items are successfully retrieved, the partners sit or kneel
next to their station
28. That
station is now off limits to all other students
29. The
instructor may wish to stop the activity and change the boundaries accordingly
if the activity presents itself as being too easy or too difficult
30. Third
level – blindfolds
31. The
instructor now presents each pair of partners with blindfolds
32. The
blue mats and extra cones are now distributed randomly in the center of the
oval activity area
33. The
object now is for one partner to assist the other partner wearing the blindfold
through the obstacles
34. The
activity’s purpose remains the same – to retrieve eight of the same item
35. The
pace will now be much slower because running is illegal
36. The
students must walk
37. Each
partner will get a chance to wear the blindfold
38. The
student wearing the blindfold must trust his/her partner
39. The
other student must assist the blindfolded partner however he/she sees fit Cues:
trust, help each other
40. Students
can do this by talking, clapping, making noises or physically guiding the
blindfolded student
41. When
the partners reach a station the non blindfolded partner retrieves an item,
gives it to his/her partner, and they return to their station
42. The
procedure is then repeated
43. The
instructor will signal when to change blindfolds
44. If
a child does not feel comfortable wearing a blindfold, he/she can cover or
close his/her eyes

What
was the focus of our activity today?
What
kind of strategies did we use?
Why
was it important to be aware of the space and of other students around us?
How
did you help each other when you wore the blindfold?
Did
you like wearing the blindfold?
