Lesson Plan – Cooperative Discussion Games

 

I.  Zoo Keeper/Tag Game

a.      Class Name: All grades K - 2

b.      Skill Level: Pre-control to control

c.      Length of Time: 45 minutes

d.      Number of Meetings: 1st class meeting

e.      Major Focus: Affective Skills

f.        Sub Focus: chasing, fleeing, dodging, pathways, levels

 

II.  Safety

a.      Activity: Spatial awareness, scooter safety, the students must get off of all equipment and sit properly when they hear the “freeze” cue. 

b.      Organizational: The “no interference rule” is in effect.  The students must walk quietly when entering the gym.  The students must wait quietly on a designated line before exiting the gym.

 

III.  Equipment

a.      scooters (number depends on class size or teacher preference)

b.      5 – 10 cones

 

IV.  Objectives

a.      Psychomotor: The student will perform proper chasing, fleeing, and dodging skills by:

1.      imitating an animals movements by walking on all fours, hopping, sliding, etc. (depending upon the animal)

2.      moving in different directions, pathways, levels

Cues: Animals escape

b.      Cognitive: The student will show an understanding of the game by:

1.      correctly imitating a chosen animal

2.      escaping only when their animal has been called by the instructor

Cues: Bears escape, Tigers escape (depends on the animal)

c.      Affective: The student will:

1.      show the ability to take turns, share, and discuss different ideas within a group

2.      be willing to listen to others and be open minded to their classmates ideas

Cues: take turns, share, discuss, open minded

 

V. Instant Activity

*   Moving to Music

*   Body Rock – moving different parts of the body and in different directions

*   Animal Action – imitating an animal while moving around the gym

*   Freeze – different locomotor movements, students freeze when the music pauses

 

VI.  Organization

a.      Initiation:

b.      Content:

*   Students form groups (size & number depends on class size)

*   Group discussion – choose an animal to imitate

*   Put hands together and hold them over their heads when they have chosen an animal

*   Instructor calls on each group and a Group Leader tells what animal his/her group will imitate

*   Students line up side by side on one end line of the gymnasium

*   Instructor sits on a scooter any where on the gymnasium floor

*   Instructor calls out one of the animals to escape, that group moves from one end of the gym to the other, trying not to be tagged by the instructor

*   The other two groups remain on the end line and wait for their group to be called

*   If a student is tagged by the instructor, he/she must go to the animal cage (this area can be designated by cones and can be a space against one of the side walls)

*   The tagged animals can escape only when the instructor calls their particular animal’s name

*   When all of the students are back to the first end line the instructor can ask them to get into their groups and discuss another animal they wish to imitate

*   Repeat the procedure

*   The instructor may wish to ask students to be a Zoo Keeper in training and help the instructor tag other students

*   The instructor may wish to have all tagged animals perform push ups, curl ups, or other exercises in the animal cage

c.      Floor Plan – one full gymnasium, game is played the long way, animal cage is located against one side wall, boundaries are basketball side and end lines

d.      Closure

*   Did we share our ideas with each other in our groups?

*   Did we listen and take turns while discussing different ideas?

*   Were we open minded to our classmates ideas?

*   Were we honest by going to the animal cage if we were tagged?

*   Was this game fun?
