I. Heart Ratea. Class Name: All grades 4 – 6 b. Skill Level: Control to utilization c. Length of Time: 45 minutes d. Number of Meetings: 1st class meeting e. Major Focus: Students learn about their Heart Rate and exercise by using HR Monitors and Pedometers f. Sub-focus: Students enter data onto PE Central Fitness site by using lap top computers, cooperation, sharing, working with a partner
II. Safetya. Activity: spatial awareness during warm ups and when walking during the activity, students must stay under control at all times b. Organizational: students must enter the gymnasium quietly and walk to an open space on the floor, students must wait quietly on a designated line before exiting the gymnasium, students must always demonstrate self control and active listening, “no interference” rule
III. Equipmenta. 1 pedometer for every other student b. 1 HR Monitor for every other student c. 10 lap top computers
IV. Objectivesa. Psychomotor: the student will perform proper fitness walking skills by: 1. applying proper bio-mechanics 2. displaying correct form and technique 3. putting forth maximum effort and participation 4. maintaining body control Cues: control, form, good pace b. Cognitive: the student will demonstrate an understanding of the HR Monitors and Pedometers by: 1. reading and utilizing correctly 2. changing settings when appropriate 3. correctly transferring all data to computer Cognitive: the student will demonstrate an understanding of how HR increases with exercise by: 1. take heart rate at rest and then again after exercise and be able to notice the difference and why Cognitive: the student will demonstrate an understanding of the Pedometer readings by: 1. transferring the amount of steps taken during the walk to the web site c. Affective: the student will demonstrate: 1. active listening skills by answering questions 2. a willingness to work with a partner 3. giving advice and encouragement
V. Organization a. Initiation · Attendance · Focus of Activity · Sub-focus of activity · Computer Demonstration · Cognitive Objective · Affective Objective · Safety Concerns b. Content · Students partner up · Students calculate Resting Heart Rate (RHR) using the HR Monitor · Write down results on work sheet provided · 1 HR Monitor for 1 partner · 1 Pedometer for the other partner · Students walk around the gym at a steady pace · Stop every 3 – 5 minutes and check HR · # beats for 10 seconds x 6 · Consistently monitor amount of steps taken · 10 minutes – students switch equipment · Those with Pedometers record the data on the web site · Both partners repeat procedure until all data has been recorded c. Floor Plan – 1 full gymnasium d. Closure · Why does your heart beat? · What happens to your heart rate after exercise? · How do we calculate HR? · How many steps are we supposed to take in one day?
