Lesson Plan – Gymnastics

 

I. Stations

a.      Class Name: 207

b.      Skill Level: Control to utilization

c.      Length of Time: 45 minutes

d.      Number of Meetings: 4th class meeting

e.      Major Focus: Rope climb, vaulting box skills, self control, safety, self assessment, peer assessment, teacher assessment

f.        Sub-focus: Rings, floor exercises, balance beam, advice, encouragement, effort

 

II. Safety

a.      Activity: spatial awareness – during warm ups and activity, student must stay under control at all times, one student performing a skill at a station at one time, students waiting to perform a skill must stand in the designated area as given by the instructor, students must only do the skills which the instructor demonstrates, all students must get off of the equipment and sit when they hear the “freeze” cue, students may not spot for one another

b.      Organizational: students must enter the gymnasium quietly and walk to an open space on the floor, students may not touch the equipment when entering the gymnasium, students must wait quietly on a designated line before exiting the gymnasium, “no interference” rule

IV. Objectives

a.      Psychomotor: the student will perform proper gymnastic skills by:

1.      applying proper bio-mechanics

2.      displaying correct form and technique

3.      putting forth maximum effort and participation

4.      maintaining body control

b.      Cognitive: the student will show an understanding of gymnastics by:

1.      following specific cues and safety guidelines

2.      practice skills at each station properly

3.      no trying advanced skills without a teacher as spotter

4.      realizing the many health benefits  - strength, flexibility, body control

Cues: focus

c.      Affective: the student will demonstrate:

1.      leadership skills when leading warm ups

2.      ability to wait patiently and properly in line

3.      advice

4.      encouragement

Cues: straight line, one person at a time

 

V. Instant Activity

*   Fitness warm ups

1.      Jog in place (1 minute)

2.      Jumping jacks (20)

3.      Push ups (10)

4.      Curl ups (10)

5.      Sit and reach (10 seconds)

6.      Alternate legs soul of shoe to inside of knee (10 seconds)

7.      Butterfly (10 seconds)

8.      Alternate arms triceps extensions over head (10 seconds)

9.      Alternate arms triceps extensions front of body (10 seconds)

10. Shoulder & neck stretch (10 seconds)

*   One student leads the activity

*   Performance is evaluated by peers, teacher and him/herself

*   Without spotter – swing and release from one side to the other

*   Station 3 – balance beam, walk forward, backward, sideways, scale

*   Station 4 – floor exercise, tumbles, rolls, cart wheels, round off, routine

*   Station 5 – swinging ropes

*   With spotter – rope climb

*   Safety – do not slide down the rope, but climb down the rope
