Lesson Plan – Gymnastics

 

I. Stations

a.      Class Name: All Kindergarten classes

b.      Skill Level: Pre-control to control

c.      Length of Time: 45 minutes

d.      Number of Meetings: 1st class meeting

e.      Major Focus: Rings, rope swing, vaulting box, balance beam, tumbling mat, tunnel, self control, safety

f.        Sub-focus: encouragement, effort

 

II. Safety

a.      Activity: spatial awareness – during warm ups and activity, student must stay under control at all times, one student performing a skill at a station at one time, students waiting to perform a skill must sit in the designated area as given by the instructor, students must only do the skills which the instructor demonstrates, all students must get off of the equipment and sit when they hear the “freeze” cue

b.      Organizational: students must enter the gymnasium quietly and walk to an open space on the floor, students may not touch the equipment when entering the gymnasium, students must wait quietly on a designated line before exiting the gymnasium, “no interference” rule

 

III. Equipment

a.      10 floor mats

b.       2 crash mats

c.      1 vaulting box

d.      2 hanging rings

e.      1 balance beam

f.        2 swinging ropes

g.      2 pair of gloves

 

IV. Objectives

a.      Psychomotor: the student will perform proper gymnastic skills by:

1.      applying proper bio-mechanics

2.      displaying correct form and technique

3.      putting forth maximum effort and participation

4.      maintaining body control

Cues: control, form

b.      Cognitive: the student will show an understanding of gymnastics by:

1.      following specific cues and safety guidelines

2.      understanding each skill and how it is performed

3.      understanding the many health benefits  - strength, flexibility, body control

Cues: focus

c.      Affective: the student will demonstrate:

1.      ability to wait patiently and properly in line

2.      advice

3.      encouragement

Cues: straight line, one person at a time

 

V. Instant Activity

*   Fitness warm ups

1.      Jog in place (1 minute)

2.      Jumping jacks (20)

3.      Push ups (10)

4.      Curl ups (10)

5.      Sit and reach (10 seconds)

6.      Alternate legs soul of shoe to inside of knee (10 seconds)

7.      Butterfly (10 seconds)

8.      Alternate arms triceps extensions over head (10 seconds)

9.      Alternate arms triceps extensions front of body (10 seconds)

10. Shoulder & neck stretch (10 seconds)

*   The instructor escorts two students at a time from station to station

*   The other students sit properly on the black sideline and wait for their turn
