Lesson Plan – Fitness
I. Pedometersa. Class Name: All grades K - 3 b. Skill Level: Pre-control to utilization c. Length of Time: 45 minutes d. Number of Meetings: 2nd class meeting e. Major Focus: Students learn about exercise by using Pedometers f. Sub-focus: Locomotor skills
II. Safetya. Activity: spatial awareness during warm ups and when walking during the activity, students must stay under control at all times b. Organizational: students must enter the gymnasium quietly and walk to an open space on the floor, students must wait quietly on a designated line before exiting the gymnasium, students must always demonstrate self control and active listening, “no interference” rule
III. Equipmenta. 1 pedometer for every other student
IV. Objectivesa. Psychomotor: the student will perform proper Locomotor skills by: 1. applying proper bio-mechanics 2. displaying correct form and technique 3. putting forth maximum effort and participation 4. maintaining body control Cues: control, form, good pace b. Cognitive: the student will demonstrate an understanding of the Pedometers by: 1. reading and utilizing data correctly 2. changing settings when appropriate and being responsible with the Pedometer 3. knowing the benefits of performing 10,000 steps per day c. Affective: the student will demonstrate: 1. active listening skills by answering questions 2. a willingness to work with a partner 3. giving advice and encouragement
V. Organization a. Initiation · Attendance · Focus of Activity · Sub-focus of activity · Cognitive Objective · Affective Objective · Safety Concerns b. Content · Students partner up · Form two straight lines behind the instructor · Partners stand side by side · One partner wears the Pedometer · The other partner gives advice and encouragement · Students follow instructor on a brisk paced walk · The walk can be performed inside or outside depending on available space and resources · It is always fun to sing songs or move to a cadence during the walk · Stop the exercise periodically to let the students check their Pedometers and how many steps they have taken · This also gives them a quick rest if needed · Stop the exercise again about half way through to allow the other partner equal time wearing the Pedometer · Variations – tag games or fitness stations c. Floor Plan – 1 full gymnasium or outside area d. Closure · How many steps are we supposed to take in one day? · Do you think walking is a good way to exercise and stay healthy? · Will running or walking add more steps in one day?
