Philosophy of
Education

I
strongly believe that every child in the Physical Education arena must be
treated fairly and instructed to his or her specific needs, abilities and
skill levels. To ensure that every student is treated accordingly a
developmentally appropriate program of learning must be practiced, which
concentrates on the development of the mind, body and character. Physical
Education is much more than rolling out the ball. It encompasses all
three domains of learning.
Technology
in the Physical Education classroom can be a useful tool that can provide
valuable skills and information to students of all ages. This can be
achieved through the use of computers (PE web sites) and on line
assessment forms (self, peer, teacher). Technology can also be used to
incorporate literacy in the Physical Education classroom as well.
The
Physical educator must employ a consistent method of discipline and
structure within the classroom. The expectations of the students should
be clearly stated and reiterated throughout the year. Students should be
assessed formatively to allow for a true documentation of their progress
in all three domains of learning. Assessments can be shared with
students, parents, faculty and department heads to better promote the
Physical Education program and its importance within the curriculum.
Physical
fitness is a very high priority for all Physical Educators. Because of
the growing numbers of overweight and obese children, every Physical
Education program must provide units and lessons that revolve around
health and fitness. Heart Rate Monitors and Pedometers are great tools to
encourage and excite students about the prospects of getting and staying
fit. Many Physical Education web sites (pe1.org) offer on line journals where
students can record data gathered from class and save it for future
reference.
In
conclusion, it is the Physical Educators responsibility to educate
students so they can become healthy, active adults. There are numerous
tools and philosophies for achieving a successful Physical Education
program. Physical Education is a very important part of a child’s
development and the Physical Educator can make a difference by
incorporating a developmentally appropriate program and concentrating on
the mind, body and character.
